If you perform your own AR builds or just want to understand your rifle - you need this resource. I used this resource to build my first lower - because of this resource I was 100% successful the first time. During my build this manual was 100% correct easy to follow step by step instructions with detailed photos to guide your efforts.Manual organization is superb: overall diagrams broken down into individual builds, individual parts lists for each build, each build has step by step instructions with augmenting photographs, and included did I do it correct verification steps.
I now have something like 2 complete AR-15s under my belt with a few more in various states of completion. I studied Youtube videos, the many magazine articles, and bought two DVDs, & perused hundreds of pages for building tips on the various Internet forums. For the price, this builder's manual isn't that much different from any of the other resources you can find online in blogs, and so on, but the pictures are well done and the installation instructions are clear and precise. I find there are no obvious problems and the order of installation chosen is a good one. The author stresses what I believe are the most important points about each step and defines his terms clearly.I do find there are no "awesome" tricks to be found here for the old hands in business of AR assembly--you'll have to find those out on your own from other resources, check Youtube--but for a beginner, it's a solid resource. I really like his coverage of cycles of AR-15 operation, function tests, and so on in the waning pages of the book. I would suggest you find the latest book by Patrick Sweeney on the AR ("The Bench Manual") to really round out your education of this beautiful rifle.
This is certainly not the only resource you would need to build your own AR, but it does a decent job. It is not complete, and I have noticed that there are several operations missing, but what is there is fairly well illustrated and explained. Against my better judgment, I bought a video to supplement this book, and I was pleasantly surprised. If you are just looking for a few repair procedures, this book will probably have them, but if you really want to learn to build or repair your AR, get the video "Building your AR from scratch" by Jim VanMiddlesworth. It is much more complete, and it has everything you could ever need in it. This book is not bad, but it is just too thin and incomplete, so if you are looking for a specific task, it is hit or miss whether it will be in this book.
Purchased this for building my first AR and I appreciated the organization of the manual as much as the clear step by step instructions. The book is divided into two parts, the lower and the upper assembly. At the beginning of each, there is an exploded view of each parts group to be used in that sections assembly identifying the parts and their name for easy identification. I took the manual to my local Office Max and had it spiral bound so it would lie flat for reference during assembly. Keeping the book for future reference and use by my sons should they opt to build an AR.AR-15 Rifle Builder's Manual: An Illustrated, Step-by-Step Guide to Assembling the AR-15 Rifle
It was exactly what I was looking for - a book that detailed all of the components, their function, and PROPER assembly. It's well worth the price to get trustworthy knowledge. The graphics are also excellent.
Excellent photography. Covers the installation of every part, piece and pin. Shows the tools needed (not many), how to check for head space and operation of the trigger group. I knew next to nothing about the rifle before I read the book, but I think if you dumped a pile of parts in my lap, I could turn it into a completed AR15 with very little trouble. A build is in my future.
Overall a pretty good manual. Where I feel it falls short is not showing the installation of a lot of the aftermarket type parts a builder is likely to be using. An example is the gas block. It shows a standard front sight post type gas block, but not any of the other commonly used styles. Same for quite a few other components. Not a big deal, and most folks will probably be able to figure out the differences, but it would be nice if more information on commonly used parts was included.
Tons of pictures showing each step in an orderly fashion.It us a perfect companion to your early builds.No, it is not for advanced builds to hit a peanut at 300 miles in a snow storm.It is a great reference for the practically minded.
